Various: Durango to Silverton

I took almost 700 pictures today!  A friend had told me that Route 550 heading north from Durango to Ridgway was an amazing highway.  He was right.

These were all taken between 800am and 115pm, local time.  Before I even got out of town I found my first photo op.

I thought y’all might be getting tired of so much green, brown and gray.  This colorful playground caught my eye in a city park.  The sun was hitting it just right.

This Jabba the Hut-like formation is actually the Pinkerton Hot Spring, and was sitting quietly oozing it’s waters right next to the highway.

As I was accelerating to get back on the highway after stopping to take some other pictures I noticed three whitetail deer, two does and a young buck, to the right side of the highway, thinking about making a dash for it.

IMG_20170826_094609607

The lead doe turned around and consulted with her friends….

IMG_20170826_094614517

…. and evidently decided “Let’s do this”

IMG_20170826_094635958

Well, they didn’t exactly dash.  They just meandered calmly across the road while I tried to alert drivers coming behind me to slow down.

The property shown above is actually for sale.  I have the contact information for the realtor if you’re interested.  Maybe I can snag a bird dog fee…

This is the entrance to the Purgatory ski area.  Earlier in the day I had seen a parade of close to 50 BMW’s driving up the road as I was stopped to take pictures.  Evidently it is a huge annual club event for the western US which had outgrown it’s previous venue, and many of the folks were staying here.

IMG_20170826_101037796

Later in the day I met a real nice guy named Ralph who lives in upstate Washington, close to the Canadian border.  I had stopped in a pullout area to take some pictures and his car was already parked there.  He was driving a BMW but said he technically wasn’t part of the club event.  He was very excited about several BMW’s which drove by us as we talked, pointing out which models they were.

IMG_20170826_134432624

He suggested I take a picture of our two cars together, with our similar blue-on-white license plates from opposite ends of the country.

IMG_20170826_135643277

I saw him again later in the day at yet another photo op, and may see him on Monday as we both plan to visit Mesa Verde National Park.

IMG_20170826_110112471_HDR

As I drove up the road there was a long stretch at fairly high elevation with no guardrail (fairly common out west, actually).  The highway department had placed orange cones to prevent people like me from pulling off.  Of course I had to go back and get pictures.

IMG_20170826_110927082

IMG_20170826_110936948

Like I would have been inclined to pull off here…..

I was safely parked on the opposite side of the road, leaning away from the drop off.

IMG_20170826_111000143

All I had to worry about were the tons of cliff rock towering above me which might come crashing down at any moment and squash me like a bug.

IMG_20170826_111640650_HDR

I took a break and turned off the road at Andrews Lake, a state day use area designed specifically for people who are physically challenged.  What a great idea to provide such a place!

IMG_20170826_113258165

This young man was part of a group of five people visiting the area.  They are traveling without an agenda or hotel reservations, just winging it as they go.  His Dad and I had a lengthy conversation about Airbnb and how it might help them find less expensive accommodations at the last minute.  I wasn’t wearing a hat, as I was expecting it to be a quick hit and run photo op.  I’m going to have some serious sunburn tomorrow!

I heard a piece on NPR a few weeks ago about a one-of-a-kind amusement park in Texas which is also designed specifically for handicapped people.  Everything there can be used by anyone, regardless of their disability.  They even have special wheelchairs which can be used underwater.  They want people to be able to enjoy their facility without inhibition and not feel that people are staring at them.  Another great idea!

I had pulled off in a parking area to take the two photos above.  As I was walking up a ramp to position myself for the second one someone yelled “Hey John”.  I wasn’t sure they were talking to me but I didn’t want to be rude so I went up to where they were after getting the shot.  Turns out I had met them earlier in my trip.  I was somewhat embarrassed that I didn’t remember them, but I talk to lots of people and they all kind of blend together.  I, on the other hand, am usually the only one wearing a Safety Sam vest.

I figured I’d better take their picture so I will remember them in the future.

At one of my stops I took a video of an Aspen tree “quaking”.  Unfortunately, I can’t post it on this blog.  For those of you who haven’t ever seen one, an Aspen tree has relatively small, rounded leaves, a little larger than a quarter.  When the wind blows the leaves appear to flutter, or quake, as they twist and turn in the breeze.  You can go to YouTube and find videos there.  It looks really cool.

IMG_3800

Since I will be extending my trip a few more weeks I should see Aspens which have changed to their fall colors, especially at elevation.  Here is a sneak preview.

I finally arrived in Silverton.

If you look closely at the bottom of the photo below you’ll see the black and yellow train.

Various: Silverton to Ouray

After getting past Silverton (I hope to visit various towns tomorrow as there appears to be some pretty cool buildings in each of them) I continued north on Route 550 until I reached the little town of Ouray.  These pictures document some of what I saw between 115pm and 4pm.

I felt bad that I couldn’t help these guys.  Two young men (they were in the red truck) had just broken down and were trying to hitch a ride.  There was no cell service but I told them I could rearrange things in my mobile man-cave but could only make room for one of them.  I offered to take one of them far enough to get cell service to call for help and then bring them back.  They thanked me, but passed.  Fortunately another couple (in the white truck) stopped and gave them both a ride, presumably to the next town.

IMG_20170826_145825271

I continued on my way, following them until the next photo op.

I know the next 4 pictures are of the same hillside but I wanted to show the size and detail, as well as the fact that it is towering right above the town of Ouray.

I arrived in little Ouray, Colorado.  I had hoped to continue north a little bit further before looping around to the west and returning to Durango on another set of roads but it was 4 o’clock and I didn’t think I’d make it back before dark, so for the second day in a row I turned around and took the same road back home.  I’ll be taking that route tomorrow from Durango.

I had taken pictures of this lake earlier in the day but stopped again because there were a few folks out on it enjoying different types of recreation.

IMG_20170826_170426170_HDR

This couple was out on a raft.

IMG_3968

This young lady was paddle boarding (I think that’s what they call this).

IMG_3975

And when she reached calmer water (like it was really rough…) she started fly fishing.

IMG_3982

And this guy was coming to shore in a kayak.

IMG_3984

As I walked back to my car I got more pictures of this really neat plant growing by the side of the road.

IMG_20170826_171030581

IMG_20170826_170959310

It looks really cool, quietly waving in the breeze.

And I finally made it back to Silverton, which is at the base of this mountain.

IMG_3961

IMG_3957

It had gotten very cloudy between Silverton and Durango so I just drove on without stopping to take any more pictures.

Evening in Durango

I got back to Durango around 600, filled the car with gas for tomorrrow’s road trip, stopped by Office Depot for another SD card (they’re on sale this week) to double-backup pictures and ordered take out from a restaurant downtown.  I don’t normally like to post food pictures but I got home in time to eat on the back deck just after the sun had gone down over the mountains to the west.

These were the views outside my bedroom windows early this morning.

And off the back deck of the house.

I hope to eat dinner in town starting tomorrow night so will post pictures of what I find there.

Various sides of Chimney Rock

Yesterday I posted two photos of Chimney Rock National Monument rock formations as seen from Route 160.  Those were taken in the early evening, after a storm had passed.  I went back to Chimney Rock this morning and took pictures from various locations with the sun hitting the formations at different angles.

These were from roughly the same vantage point as those I posted yesterday.

IMG_3580

IMG_3585

Next I went to the turnoff from Route 160 onto a paved road which takes you to the gravel access road.  This gives the best illustration of a chimney on a rooftop.

IMG_3594

These were from the paved road (Route 700, I believe).

IMG_3606

IMG_3605

And I noticed a third formation, not visible from Route 160.

IMG_3608

Then I reached the gravel access road.  These were from the entrance.

I then drove east on Route 160 towards Pagosa Springs and South Fork.  Later in the day I decided to return to Durango rather than continue the loop north and got this shaded silhouette shot from some distance away.  I tried getting the same shot the day before but it had just rained and it was too blurry to post.

Hummingbirds near Chimney Rock

As I was getting ready to leave Chimney Rock I heard a buzzing sound.  While taking pictures around the Visitor Center I hadn’t even noticed the hummingbird feeders.

IMG_20170825_103821312_HDR

I actually took these first few photos will my smartphone camera (it really takes some awesome pictures!).

Prairie Dogs near Chimney Rock

As I was driving out of the Visitor Center and back towards the paved road I noticed a bunch of prairie dogs running around.  I had seen prairie dogs in the Badlands when I was up in South Dakota at the beginning of my trip but I didn’t have my digital camera then so the pictures weren’t all that great.

I waited until one popped his head out to see if the coast was clear.

IMG_3663

Then I parked my car and waited for more to appear.  It didn’t take long.

Wild Turkeys near Chimney Rock

As I was leaving Chimney Rock a flock of turkeys trotted across the road well out in front of me.

Tom/Hen/Chick/Flock.  But it’s not quite that simple, bucko.  An adult male may also be called a Gobbler.  A newborn may also be called a Poult.  Male offspring are called Jakes and females are called Jennys.  And a group is called a Flock if wild, but if domesticated they are called a Rafter.

Oh, the things you learn on johnboystravelblog…..

Wolf Creek Pass Overlook

When I met Earl Valdez while getting gas in Fort Garland yesterday (you’ve met his dog, Nia) he told me that when I drove through Wolf Creek Pass there would be a scenic pullout with a fantastic view overlooking the valley to the west.  It was raining when I got there yesterday and visibility was not good, so I went back today as part of my big loop east of Durango.

Boy, was he right….
